Physical Education

P.E. is an à la carte course for Middle and Upper Elementary students designed to inspire a love of fitness and to increase physical activity. Students will participate in organized sports and clinics, experience various fitness regimens such as calisthenics, running, and more.

Life Skills
Course Duration: 26 weeks; Tuesdays, 12:30-2:15
Course Fee: $600

This class is designed for students in 5th-8th grade to gain practical experience in sewing and mending, etiquette, handicrafts such as crochet and felting, health and nutrition, simple cooking skills, fitness, self-defense, community service, first aid, maps and compasses, outdoor survival, woodworking, and simple home maintenance. Subjects vary from year to year, and no two years are identical. The course includes 26 weeks of fun and engaging hands-on classes taught by skilled teachers, as well as all materials needed for the class.

Families may want to purchase additional materials on their own for further practice at home. Students who are registered for Thursday classes at Esprit receive priority registration for the Life Skills class. As the activities vary each year, students may take the class several times throughout the middle grade years.

7th Grade Mathematics
Course Duration: 26 weeks; Mondays, online; 1-2
Course Fee: $500 (includes textbook)

This 7th-grade math course (All Things Algebra) builds core number sense and problem-solving skills starting with integers, fractions, decimals and percents, then moves into expressions, solving equations and inequalities, and working with ratios/proportions. Students learn functions and graphing (coordinate plane, slope), get an introduction to geometry (angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, transformations), master area/volume and surface area, and explore probability and statistics through real-world problems and data displays.

Pre-Algebra
Course Duration: 26 weeks; Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:15-3:15
Course Fee: $600 (includes textbook)

This course for middle school students reinforces basic math concepts as they prepare for Algebra I and other high school maths. Students will study real numbers, algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities, ratio, proportions, percents, functions and linear relationships, geometry, measurement, and probability and statistics. Pre-Algebra is a class that removes the intimidation that often accompanies math, making it a delight for students to discover their problem solving capabilities in a positive learning environment.

World Geography
Course Duration: 26 weeks; Tuesdays, 10:45- 12
Course Fee: $450

Precocious students in the 8th grade are invited take the Upper School World Geography course for high school honors credit. This exciting course provides students with a cultural experience of geography based upon the exploration, discovery, and mapmaking of the world. Students will view and learn maps, discover famous explorers, world cultures, landscapes and environments, geographical tools and methods, and be able to locate the wonders of the world both ancient and new. By the end of the course, students discover that they know how to easily label a political map of the world from memory.

Online readings and videos, the marvelous Richard Halliburton books, and cultural experiences including music, dance, cooking, and more make for a robust and exciting study of our beautiful world and the people who live within it.

Theater Club
Course Duration: 26 weeks; Tuesdays, 3:15-5
Course Fee: $600

This fun class explores acting, artistic skills including costume and set design, and other various aspects of production. Middle and Upper School students will learn how to overcome stage fright, work on poetry and monologues, and present two productions for families and friends to enjoy. From Shakespeare to more contemporary works, and props to special effects, students in Theater Club will love this creative and collaborative learning experience.

Why Parents Love It

Parents love the practical and creative skills in Life Skills, the focus on teamwork, discipline, and fitness in P.E., and partnering with a teacher whose love for math is contagious as students prep for upper level math classes in 7th Grade Math and Pre-Algebra. Parents also love the option to have their 8th graders take Upper school courses like World Geography and Theater Club for high school credit.

Spots in P.E., Life Skills, and Theater Club are limited to 20 students and 7th Grade Math and Pre-Algebra are limited to 12. We also maintain a waiting list once full.
