French I

This introductory French course provides a language-rich environment that promotes foreign language learning through reading and storytelling. Providing natural language acquisition in humorous, relaxed situations, the course does not begin with a stress on grammatical instruction, but rather encourages grammatical correctness by modeling correct speech and usage. Students learn to relate language to actual objects and actions through an immersive experience that promotes long-term memory retention because it is visual, physical, acoustical, and contextual.
Spanish II
Course Duration: 28 weeks; Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:45-2
Course & Lab Fees: $550
After having gone through studies in Spanish I, students will reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the language. Throughout the year, students will enjoy learning about Spanish-speaking cultures and show evidence of becoming lifelong learners using Spanish for personal enjoyment and enrichment. The skills acquired in year one will be developed and enhanced so that the students obtains mastery and are able to converse in the language. Grammar studies will be explored, including present tense, past tenses (both preterit and imperfect), articles, infinitives, conditional tense, gerund, reflexive verbs, indirect and direct object pronouns, verb conjugations within the context of oral stories.
World Geography
Class Duration: 26 weeks; Tuesdays, 10:45-12
Course Fee: $450
This exciting course provides students with a cultural experience of geography based upon the exploration, discovery, and mapmaking of the world. Students will view and learn maps, discover famous explorers, world cultures, landscapes and environments, geographical tools and methods, and be able to locate the wonders of the world both ancient and new. By the end of the course, students discover that they know how to easily label a political map of the world from memory.
Online readings and videos, the marvelous Richard Halliburton books, and cultural experiences including music, dance, cooking, and more make for a robust and exciting study of our beautiful world and the people who live within it.
Government & Economics
Course Duration: 26 Weeks; Tuesdays, 9:15-10:30
Course & Class Supply Fees: $450
Using a combination of primary source documents, videos, and engaging living books, students will study the following topics: United States Federal Government structure and power division, the U.S. Constitution, civil liberties and rights, the politics of public opinion, interest groups and lobbying, voting and elections, courts and the judicial system, local governments, domestic and foreign policy, economic theories and principles in both microeconomics and macroeconomics, and economic history including a selection of U.S. government economic policies and their effects. Students will learn to recognize logical fallacies and think critically about the importance and functioning of our government and economic policies. This course will provide .5 credit for American Government and .5 credit for Economics.
Theater Club
Course Duration: 26 Weeks; Tuesdays, 3:15-5
Course & Class Supply Fees: $600
This fun class explores acting, artistic skills including costume and set design, and other various aspects of production. Middle and Upper School students will learn how to overcome stage fright, work on poetry and monologues, and present two productions for families and friends to enjoy. From Shakespeare to more contemporary works, and props to special effects, students in Theater Club will love this creative and collaborative learning experience.
Study Hall
Course Duration: 26/28 Weeks; Tuesdays or Thursdays
Course Fees: $150
Students may stay on campus between classes in a quiet, monitored study hall period to work on homework assignments and prepare for class. Students should not have two study hall periods back-to-back unless prior approval has been given.

Parents love the elective courses at Esprit because their students have the freedom to explore more than just core subjects. From tracing the world's physical and cultural landscapes in World Geography, understanding our nation's story in American History, examining civic responsibility in Government and Economics, communicating in French and Spanish, expressing creativity through Theater, and developing artistic skills in Art, students have many options to learn and grow as creative thinkers.
Registration
Spots in Theater Club are limited to 20 students all other Upper School electives are limited to 12. We also maintain a waiting list once full.
