Literature & Poetry
Students will discuss quality literature, learn and recite poetry, and practice the art of oral narration. Second grade students will study classic and contemporary literature and poetry through chapter books, picture books, and engaging, hands-on activities. At home, students will listen to read-alouds, orally narrate, and complete some light home assignments to prepare for the next class day.
Science & Nature Study
Through hands-on experiences and nature connections, students will study the intriguing worlds of insects (first semester) and fields & flowers (second semester).
In unity with all other Esprit students, 2nd grade students will engage in a focused nature study of invertebrates (Fall), rocks, minerals, and soil (Winter), and fish (Spring). Home assignments include some light outside reading and one or two nature walks and studies each week.
Geography
Students will discover their physical space in the universe and build on a practical understanding of how a compass is used, the planets, orbits, the earth’s rotation, the poles, the earth’s spinning on its axis making the beautiful seasons, and more. Homework includes some light reading, night walks to observe the night sky, and review of the in-class learning.
Handicrafts & Arts
Students will explore handicrafts and various art forms throughout the year, including weaving, painting, sewing, beading, collage, and more. Folk music and hymns will be learned using rhythm instruments, and students will learn about orchestral instruments and the story of the orchestra. Famous works of art will be studied through picture study and art experiences. Some handicraft and art supplies will be suggested for at-home practice, but all in-class materials are provided.

Why Parents Love It
Parents love having their kids confidently observe and learn about insects (rather than squeal about them!), discover beloved stories through books by E.B. White, learn the instruments of the orchestra through sight and sound, and grow in their understanding of their place on the planet and in our solar system.
Registration
Spots are limited to 12 students. We also maintain a waiting list once full.
